8/10-IELTS Writing Task 4-Cynthia

In modern society, the issue of fast fashion has sparked widespread debate. While some individuals argue that the fast fashion industry causes serious environmental damage, others believe that it provides consumers with affordable and accessible clothing options. In my opinion, although fast fashion offers certain benefits for customers, its negative impacts on social costs and the environment are far more significant.

Supporters argue that fast fashion brings significant benefits to consumers by making clothing both affordable and accessible. Due to mass production and low-cost materials(,) retailers can sell trendy clothing at a fraction of the price of high-end brands. This allows individuals, especially young people, to keep up with fashion trends without spending a large amount of money. For example, a survey by Fashion Retail Association found that 60% of consumers aged 18-25 purchase fast fashion items because they can update their wardrobe regularly without financial strain. As a result, fast fashion plays a key role in meeting the needs of budget-conscious shoppers.

On the other hand, critics believe that fast fashion causes severe environmental damage(is detrimental to environment) and promotes unsustainable consumption habits. The industry generates massive textile waste and contributes to water pollution through the use of toxic dyes and chemicals. Moreover, the short lifespan of fast fashion items encourages a throwaway culture, where consumers quickly discard clothing after minimal use. For instance, the global waste water and total carbon emission have increased rapidly around the world. Consequently, the environmental costs of fast fashion far outweigh its short-term affordability.

In conclusion, while fast fashion provides affordable and accessible clothing options for consumers, it also poses serious threats to the environment. From my perspective, the environmental damage cause by this industry cannot be justified by its short-term financial benefits.
