There is an ongoing debate regarding whether it is beneficial for people to learn foreign language at an early age or start from later life. From my perspective, I firmly believe that people should learn different languages when they are children, and the reasons will be elaborated in the following paragraphs.
Some individuals believe it is better to learn later in life for two main reasons: having clearer motivation and knowing more effective learning strategies. To begin with, people in later life have already cleared their mind, which makes them have specific motivation and goals. In other words, since people want to chase their dreams and achieve their potential, they may be more willing to make great effort on learning new language. For example, I study English 8 hours each day to get high score on IELTS, as I want to study abroad. Furthermore, adults have various study strategies, helping them to learn other languages by systematical methods. For instance, some people learn four or five languages after they graduated from the college, as they can plan effective study plans and find the ways that (is) suitable for them.
Some members of society believe that people should learn new languages at an early age due to(since) children have better cognitive skills and it is easy for them to integrate new language into daily life. First and foremost, while people have better cognitive skills, they can learn new things more effective. To be more specific, they can learn new things or languages through observation and imitation, which are skills that most children have more readily. Based on a study conducted by National Taiwan University, the average of total learning time that adults need is 300 hours more than children per year. Moreover, if individuals can learn new language at an early age, they can easily integrate it into daily life. People get used to using these languages, as they speak and read them from their childhood life. For example, my mom taught my sister English and Chinese after she was born. As a result, when my sister was a kindergarten student, she already could speak both languages fluently.
In conclusion, although learning different languages at adults’ life that people can have clear study goals and have various learning strategies, people benefit more to learn at an early age. They can easily use the language in their daily lives and they also have strong learning power.
