There is an ongoing debate regarding whether the prevalent of fashion industry may bring severe impact on the environment or it is a beneficial thing for consumers. From my perspective, I am in favour of the former statement, and the reasons will be elaborated on the following paragraphs.
On the one hand, various choices and low prices are the two main reasons that people think it is a good option for customers. First and foremost, fast fashion items offer a wide variety of styles and update their collections frequently. This strategy appeals many buyers, especially young people, as individuals can choose whatever they want. In addition, it will provide the products which follow the present trends. Furthermore, the items are all produced by large amount, so its production costs are low enough to sell in low prices. Take Zara as an example. They attract customers by constantly releasing new and fashionable pieces at relatively low costs, which successfully become one of the top three garments brand in the world.
On the other hand, the degradation of the environment may also stem from the development of fast fashion. The emission of carbon dioxide is a primary reason for damaging the planet. To be more specific, businesses produce various products, which also emit numerous fumes and toxic substances in the air. As a result, ecosystems are damaged and global warming continues to accelerate. Based on a study conducted by National Taiwan University. The fashion industry is responsible for roughly 20% of global carbon emissions, making it one of the most polluting industries in the world. Moreover, it will create considerable waste, as millions of clothes are discharged each year after just being worn a few times. This phenomenon may be overloading landfills and damaging soil, posing a long-term threat to citizens’ future lives.
In conclusion, based on the aforementioned. Although some individuals believe fast fashion is a more affordable and accessible option for the public, I am firmly convinced that environmental destruction issues are more concerning due to the emission of carbon dioxide and the disposal of textile waste.
