1/20-IELTS Writing Task 2-Bernice

The topic of learning a foreign language has become increasingly important in today’s society, with many people holding different opinions. Some argue that learning a foreign language at a young age is more effective, while others believe that it should begin later in life. In this essay, I will discuss both perspectives and provide my own opinion on the matter.

Firstly, for those who support the idea that there is an advantage for learning a foreign language at an early age often argue that it enhances pupils’ competitiveness, especially when they pursue to enroll in an outstanding senior high school or university(add on another perspective). For instance, when I was a sophomore, my parents valued my English exam performance extremely. Moreover, my teacher emphasized that having an exceptional English score on the national exam can be an extra advantage for us. This shows that studying a foreign language when we are students can enhance our competitiveness. In the long term, it is an effective way that the admissions committees distinguish our level.

On the other hand, others believe that there is a disadvantage for learning a foreign language since children are unfamiliar with their own native language, and therefore learning a new language at a young age could be ineffective(add on another perspective). For example, according to the recent news, it is reported that aboriginal children in Taiwan learn Chinese in elementary school. In comparison, they lose the ability to speak their own indigenous languages. This suggests that students should prioritize our native language, raising a sense of identity to their own culture.

In conclusion, while there are valid arguments on both sides of the debate surrounding whether learning a foreign language at an early age is beneficial or adverse or not, I believe that both sides of perspectives are important. It can enhance teenagers’ competitiveness. There is a potential issue, such as being unfamiliar with their own native language.
