Recently, the debate about whether“print is dead” has become a hot topic. Some people argue that e-books will become the mainstream due to its efficiency and environmentally friendly. However, others believe that paper books will exist in the future. In their opinion, paper books are not only useful for reading, but also represent a form of art. In my opinion, paper books will still exist in the future.
On the one hand, supporters of e-books emphasize their convenience and sustainability. Unlike printed books, which require large amounts of paper and ink, e-books can be stored digitally without harming the environment. In addition, carrying an e-reader or a tablet allows people to access thousands of books at once, which is especially useful for students and professionals who need to read many materials. For example, university students, often prefer digital textbooks, especially for students who study literature, e-books are more cheaper, and easier to search online. Furthermore, due to digital record, people can read some precious book which is no longer continued or even banned by government.
On the other hand, paper books have qualities that e-books cannot totally replace. Many readers enjoy the physical feeling of turning pages, the smell of ink, and the visual design of covers and illustrations. Collectors also see books as cultural and artistic objects rather than just tools for reading. Furthermore, reading on digital devices may cause eye strain and distraction due to notifications, while paper books provide a calmer reading experience. For these reasons, paper books maintain a special emotional and aesthetic value.
In my point of view, although e-books will continue to grow in popularity, paper books will not disappear. Instead, the two formats will exist together, each serving different needs. E-books are practical for daily learning and travel, while paper books will remain important for collectors, libraries, and people who appreciate the beauty of traditional reading.
