Some parents believe that it is more favourable for children to begin studying a language at an early age, while others think that it is better to start later in life. This essay will first discuss the perspective that the learning a second language at an early age allows children to achieve higher fluency and supports brain development. Then, it will analysis the opposing view that early learning may confuse children, which, in my opinion, is not a valid concern.
Firstly, those who support language learning argue that learning an additional language at a very young age is beneficial, because children have more time to practise (practice)and become fluent. Moreover it can also develop pupils’ brain. For example, in countries such as Holland and Norway where English is taught from an early age, and most adults can speak (this language) fluently and naturally. Learning an additional language could help youngsters to enhance overall cognitive ability. In other words, it is good for the overall development of young people’s brains.(personal example) Some experts called ‘bi-lingual children’ are considerably more likely to score higher in both mathematics and science.
On the other hand, some individuals say that it causes the youngsters to become confused between their mother tongue and another language. However, there is no solid evidence to support this view and children from bilingual families can also do well in both languages. For example, one of my acquaintance’s daughters speaks four languages: English, Chinese, Taiwanese and Italian. In school, she outperforms most of her classmates.
In conclusion, I believe that learning a foreign language at an early age is more beneficial than starting later. While some parents are concerned that early language learners may confuse the foreign language with their mother tongue, there is no evidence to support this concern because many bilingual children not only can perform well and also score higher than other pupils.
