The impact of peer pressure on young generation has gained attention recently, and has divided opinions. While some people arguing(argue) that peer pressure can encourage individuals to strive for self-improvement, or having(which is) highly connected with personal achievement. On the other hand, others believe that it often leads to unfavorable results. From my perspective, although peer pressure may have certain benefits, its negative effects tend to outweigh the positives, especially for the young students who are experiencing adolescence(adolescents). This essay will provide some examples to support my argument and show why peer pressure causes adverse effects on young students.
Initially, one of the most significant drawbacks of peer pressure is its impact on mental health. In highly competitive environments, such as senior school, students are frequently compared with their peers, leading to intense stress and serious anxiety. For instance, there have been numerous cases of students who studied in prestigious schools, suffering from depression or incorrect self-awareness due to the immense pressure which caused by endless comparisons.(there are numerous cases regarding students suffering from depression or incorrect self-awareness because of immense pressure.) (Personal experience) These tragic result reveals how comparisons and unrealistic expectations from peers can increase student’s mental burden, and push them over the edge.
Although peer pressure is not always harmful, on contrast, in some cases, it can bring positive impacts to young students.(Although peer pressure is often detrimental, in some cases, it can bring positive impacts to young students) When it(peer pressure) occurs in a supportive and appropriately situation, it can motivate students to perform better and develop discipline. For example, during university, I joined a study group for a difficult statistics course that had a heavy workload, and our team had a bet that the student who got the highest score in the exam will win free meals and coffee. We exchanged study tips, set goals, and pushed each others to stay on track. As a result, we all achieved ideal grades and passed the course. This experience shows that under the premise of friendly situation, peer pressure can foster academic growth and enhance our motivation to pursue higher achievement.
However, the effectiveness of peer pressure highly depends on a young person’s maturity and emotional resilience. While some students get advantages from healthy competition, others may feel overwhelmed when they fall behind. If peer pressure becomes a source of self-criticism, it can decrease their self-esteem and block(hinder) personal growth, not to mention that young students are extremely sensitive and immature. Therefore, without properly guide, peer pressure is more harm than help.
In conclusion , although peer pressure can occasionally inspire positive change , I still believe that its potential risks are more than rewards. Compared to academic performance and mental health, the latter is obviously more important than the former. Throughout history, great achievements have always been built by consistent effort and plenty of passion, not rankings or a sense of superiority.
